The LAS Links testing period has ended! Results will be sent home in May.
Conferences will be held on March 15, 16 and 17. Classroom teachers will contact you to set up an appointment. We can provide translators as needed.
We are continuing with the Units we began in January.

First Grade: Changing and Growing. Students will learn about the life cycles of animals.
Second Grade: Water for Everyone. Students will learn about the water cycle, and the importance of having clean drinking water available throughout the world.
Third Grade: Blast! Crash! Splash!: Forces of Nature. Students will learn about volcanoes, tsunamis and earthquakes.
Fourth Grade: Moving Through Space. Students will learn about the necessary skills and technology to navigate through space.
Fifth Grade: Every Drop. Students will learn about environmental effects on Earth’s water.
All units at every grade level incorporate speaking, listening, reading and writing. The curriculum we use, National Geographic Reach, supports what the students are learning in the classroom. The stories and articles are written on grade level, and incorporate the amazing photos of National Geographic. Ask your child what he/she has learned about in ESL class.
The Taste of Discovery will be tomorrow night, Thursday, January 26 from 5:30 to 7:30. Bring your favorite dish and socialize with Discovery families and staff. We hope to see you there!

On Monday, January 9, students will begin taking the LAS Links Assessment. The LAS is a language test that assesses student growth in Speaking, Listening, Reading and Writing. The Speaking part is given individually. The other parts are taken in small groups. All of the tests are sent to the State of CT to be graded. We should have the results by May and a copy will be sent home. The scores do not go on the report card. The results are used to plan instruction for each student, along with classroom teacher information and other data. El lunes, 9 de enero, los estudiantes comenzarán a tomar la evaluación de LAS Links. El LAS es una prueba de lenguaje que evalúa el crecimiento estudiantil en hablar, escuchar, leer y escribir. La parte Hablando se da individualmente. Las otras partes se toman en grupos pequeños. Todas las pruebas se envían al Estado de CT para que se califiquen. Debemos tener los resultados en mayo y una copia será enviada a casa. Las calificaciones no figuran en el boletín (Report Card). Los resultados se usan para planear la instrucción para cada estudiante, junto con la información del maestro y otros datos. نحيط علم سيادتكم أن جميع طلاب المدرسة سيخضعون لاختبار LAS Links Assessment. إختبار LAS هو إمتحان لقياس القدرة الأطفال على الكلام، السمع، القراءة و الكتابة. الجزء الخاص بقياس القدرة على الكلام، يتم إمتحان الطفل وحيداً. بقية الأجزاء جميعها يتم إختبار الأطفال في مجموعات صغيرة. بعد إنتهاء من الاختبار، يتم إرسال جميع الإختبارات للولاية ليتم تصحيحها. بعد التصحيح، تبعث الولاية بنتائج الإختبار للمدرسة في شهر مايو ويتم إرسال نسخة إلى أولياء الأمور في المنزل. لا يتم الرابط بين نتيجة إختبار LAS و التقرير الثلث ثانوي للطلاب. تستخدم نتيجة إتختبار LAS لتعديل طريقة تدريس المنهج الدراسي للطفل، لتقييم المدرس و بعض المعطيات الأخرى.

بدأنا هذا الأسبوع في دراسة جزء جديد من المنهج و سنستمر في دراسته حتى نهاية شهر فبراير:
الحضانة: الهواء، الأمطار و الثلج – يدرس الأطفال تغيير الفصول والمناخ.
الصف الأول: التط ر و النمو – يدرس الأطفال دورة الحياة في الحيوانات
الصف الثاني: المياه للجميع – يدرس الأطفال دورة المياه و أهمية توفير مياه شرب نظيفة لكل سكان الأرض
الصف الثالث: الكوارث الطبيعية – يدرس الأطفال عن البراكين، الأعاصير و الزلازل
الصف الرابع: الفضاء – يدرس الأطفال التكنولوجيا و المهارات المطلوبة للوصول للفضاء
الصف الخامس: كل قطرة – يدرس الأطفال تأثير البيئة الم يطة بهم على المياه في كوكب الأرض
تتبع المدرسة منهج National Geographic Reach الذي يدمج الكلام، السمع، القراءة والكتابة لجميع الفصول الدراسية. يتم ذلك عن طريق مقالات وقصص مكتوبة لمستوى كل فصل دراسي مصحوبة بصور من مجلة National Geographic الحائزة على جوائز عديدة حول العالم.

Hello Families! It was a pleasure speaking with you during conferences.
All grades began new units at the beginning of December.
The Kindergarten unit is called On the Job. The students are learning about different careers. They are classifying jobs as Jobs That Help and Jobs That Make Something.
In First Grade, the unit is Creature Features. The students are comparing and contrasting the special attributes of a variety of animals.
The Second Grade unit is entitled Better Together. The students are using vocabulary words such as cooperate, opportunity, success and result to answer the Unit Questions: Why do people work together? What do we gain when we give?
The Third Graders are learning about solids, liquids and gases in the unit Mysteries of Matter. They are using the words alter occur, substance, state, composition and combine to explain changes in matter.
The Fourth Grade unit is Treasure Hunters. Unit vocabulary includes legend, chart, exploration, interpret, colony and currency. With the fiction selections, the students are focusing on how a character changes throughout the text, and how these changes drive the plot. The non-fiction texts include history articles in which the students are citing evidence to support inferences.
The Fifth Grade unit is called The Wild, Wild West. A variety of non-fiction accounts chronicle the Westward Expansion.
All units include the four language domains: reading, writing, listening and speaking.
Enjoy the Winter Break! We will begin new units when the students return in January. The students will also be taking the LAS Links that assess language growth. I will post more information about LAS Links in January.
